Biography
Johana Hartwig responds to the physicality of spaces and her work often centres around value linked to human impact in urban environments.
Johana graduated from University of Wales Institute, Cardiff in 2001 and has since exhibited in group shows across the UK and Europe. Recent work includes collaborating with a coder on an ACW-funded R and D project ‘Floating Fibres’ in 2018 to create a ‘river blanket’ based on atmospheric data. This project explored using open source technology to look at Cardiff’s rivers through textiles and question our relationship with our city rivers and included a mini residency with the Boat Studio on the Gloucester-Sharpness canal.
In 2017 Johana worked with an Archaeologist at the G39 Unit(e) Summer School and explored the ‘fabric’ of the gallery including what lay underneath the surface of the grounds of the gallery space. In 2013 Johana founded Art Shell, an arts project which helps to support artists make new site responsive work, conduct arts research and source alternative spaces for showing work. Much of Johana’s personal work and her work with Art Shell involves cross-disciplinary practice as a way of stimulating ideas and sharing practice and perspectives.
Johana Hartwig studied Sculpture at Cardiff School of Art (1998-2001) she now lives and works in Cardiff on the river Taff.
